Abstract: The silica encapsulated waterborne aluminum pigments were prepared using[Ni(NH3)62+ as anchoring agent.Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction results showed that the boehmite was formed on the surface of aluminum flakes by[Ni(NH3)62+ oxidizing aluminum. The results of scanning electron microscopy, optical microscopy and corrosion resistance test proved that by controlling the pH of encapsulated media at about 9.5,the boehmite on aluminum flakes surface can react with silanols which come from the hydrolysis of tetraethoxysilane and silane. This makes a silica sol-gel film form on the aluminum flakes surface. This sol-gel film improves the corrosion resistance of the aluminum pigments.
